India's UGC online-degree framework allows eligible universities to deliver full degree programmes entirely online. The compliance bar is real but achievable — and the market is genuinely large. Here's what setting up an online degree programme actually involves in 2026.

Eligibility and approvals

Universities need to be NAAC-accredited above a threshold grade (currently 3.26+) or appear in the NIRF rankings. Approvals from UGC's Distance Education Bureau (DEB) are programme-specific. Plan 4–6 months for first approval; renewals are faster.

Technology requirements

  • An LMS with proctored exam capability and audit trail
  • Live class infrastructure and recording archive
  • SIS / ERP integration for student records
  • SWAYAM / NPTEL credit integration where applicable
  • Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID handling

Indian data residency is non-negotiable

Pick LMS hosting in AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) and verify DPDPA 2023 alignment. See LMS for universities in India for the full Indian-context feature set.

Launch one programme first

Most successful Indian universities launch one online degree (typically MBA or MCA) first, get it operationally smooth across two semesters, then scale to a portfolio of 5–8 programmes. See our case studies for examples.
