DeepTech vs edX: AI LMS Alternative to edX for Universities
edX is a global MOOC platform and an open-source courseware project (Open edX). DeepTech is a branded institutional LMS — same hosted convenience, but the university owns the brand, the learner data, and the credential.
At-a-glance verdict
edX (and the Open edX courseware project) is a strong fit if you want to publish public MOOCs to global learners or run open-source self-hosted infrastructure with engineering capacity. DeepTech is the right fit when you need a branded, hosted SaaS LMS for credit-bearing programmes — AI course builder, multilingual delivery, AI-proctored exams, and browser cyber labs in one platform.
Feature matrix
| Feature | DeepTech | edX |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Branded institutional LMS for credit-bearing programmes | MOOC platform (edx.org) and open-source courseware (Open edX) |
| Hosting | Hosted SaaS on AWS (Mumbai / Bahrain / Singapore / Cape Town) | edX.org is hosted; Open edX is self-hosted by you |
| Branding | Full white-label — your domain, your apps, your colours | edX.org is the edX brand; Open edX is your install |
| AI course builder | Built-in — generate full course (video + transcript + quiz) from a topic | Not native |
| Multilingual delivery | 60+ languages with neural re-narration | Subtitles only; manual content translation |
| AI proctoring | Built-in — 50k+ concurrent test-takers | Third-party (Proctortrack on edX.org) |
| Cyber labs | Browser-based Kali, multi-machine networks, CTF, SOC | Not included natively |
| Learner-data ownership | Always the institution | On edX.org the platform owns the relationship; Open edX is yours |
| Open source | No — proprietary SaaS | Open edX is AGPL v3 |
How the bills compare
DeepTech
Per-learner annual licence; transparent tiers + Enterprise.
edX
edX.org partner agreements are bespoke; Open edX is free but you pay for hosting, DevOps, integrations, and upgrades.
Open edX's 'free' headline understates total cost once you include hosting (~₹15–40 lakh/year for a large deployment), AGPL compliance review, plugin maintenance, theme dev, and on-call DevOps.
A balanced view
Pick DeepTech if…
- ✓You want a branded SaaS LMS for your university — not a MOOC storefront
- ✓AI course builder + multilingual delivery + AI proctoring matter to you
- ✓You need cyber labs out of the box
- ✓You don't want to run an Open edX install with a DevOps team
Pick edX if…
- ·You want to publish public MOOCs reaching global learners via edx.org
- ·You have engineering capacity and prefer AGPL self-hosting
- ·Your courseware author tooling (XBlocks) is a hard requirement
Switching from edX
Import Open edX SCORM and xAPI exports, plus structured exports of courses, enrolments, and grades. Branded learner portal goes live in 4–6 weeks; deep AI features (course builder + proctoring) ship at the same time.
edX comparison — questions
Is DeepTech open source like Open edX?
No. DeepTech is a proprietary SaaS LMS. If AGPL self-hosting is a hard requirement, Open edX is the right tool. If branded institutional delivery, AI course builder, AI proctoring, and cyber labs are the priority, DeepTech ships those out of the box on a hosted SaaS.
Can we run programmes on edX.org and DeepTech together?
Yes. Many universities use edX.org for global discovery MOOCs and DeepTech for credit-bearing internal programmes. Course content can be authored once and published to both via SCORM / xAPI bridges.
What about Open edX self-hosting?
Open edX is a credible AGPL alternative if you have engineering capacity. Most Indian universities we work with chose DeepTech specifically to avoid the DevOps, plugin-licensing, and upgrade overhead an Open edX install brings.
