Online Password Attacks

Hydra LabOnline brute-force against SSH, RDP, HTTP, and 50+ services.

Practice Hydra online in a real cyber lab — brute-force SSH, FTP, RDP, HTTP forms, and SMB against isolated targets. Real services, real responses, browser-based.

Overview

What is Hydra?

THC-Hydra is a parallelised online password-cracking tool that supports 50+ protocols — SSH, FTP, RDP, SMB, HTTP forms, MySQL, PostgreSQL, VNC and more. It is the standard tool for testing whether services are vulnerable to credential stuffing or weak-password attacks.

Inside the lab

Practising Hydra in a real cyber lab

Hydra is pre-installed on the Kali image. Lab targets expose real SSH, FTP, RDP, HTTP login forms, and SMB shares with intentionally weak credentials, so learners see the same rate-limit and lockout behaviours they will encounter in real engagements.

Hands-on

What you'll practice

Hands-on exercises that build job-ready Hydra skills.

  • Brute-force SSH and FTP with curated wordlists
  • Run HTTP POST form attacks against vulnerable web logins
  • Test RDP and SMB credential lists against Windows targets
  • Observe defender-side responses: fail2ban, account lockouts, WAF
  • Combine Hydra with credential lists generated from OSINT exercises

Available in: Tier 2 — Kali VM, and Tier 3 — Multi-Machine Networks.

Questions, answered

Hydra lab FAQ

Is online brute forcing legal to practise here?

Yes — the targets are isolated lab machines you are explicitly authorised to attack. The lab network never reaches the public internet, so practice is fully ethical.

Do the targets actually lock out?

Yes. Defender-side controls (fail2ban, lockout policies, WAF) are intentionally enabled on some targets so learners see what authentication hardening looks like from the attacker side.

Which services are most useful to practise against?

SSH, RDP, HTTP login forms, and SMB are the highest-yield services in real engagements. The lab covers all four plus FTP, MySQL, and VNC for breadth.
