While an LMS asks "what do learners need to complete?", an LXP asks "what do learners want to explore?". LXPs typically aggregate content from multiple sources (internal courses, LinkedIn Learning, YouTube, podcasts, articles), apply a recommendation engine, and present a Netflix-like browse experience. Most corporate L&D stacks pair both: the LMS for compliance and mandatory training, the LXP for self-directed skill building.
When to choose an LXP over an LMS (or both)
- Choose an LMS when you need structured programmes, graded assessments, compliance reporting, and certifications.
- Choose an LXP when you want content discovery, informal learning, and recommendation-driven upskilling without fixed cohorts.
- Use both when you serve mandatory compliance training AND voluntary skill development — common in enterprise L&D.
