Flipped Classroom

Also known as: inverted classroom, flip learning

In a flipped classroom, students encounter new material (video lectures, readings, interactive content) at home via the LMS before class, then use class time for practice, discussion, problem-solving, and instructor-guided application.

The flipped classroom model inverts the traditional homework/lecture cycle. The LMS carries the asynchronous instructional load — pre-class videos (typically 8–15 minutes), readings, and auto-graded check-for-understanding quizzes. Faculty can see in the LMS analytics who watched and who scored below threshold before class, focusing limited contact time on the learners who need it most.

LMS requirements for effective flipping

  • Video completion tracking (not just "viewed" — per-segment engagement).
  • Pre-class quiz lock: learners must score ≥ X% before the class meeting unlocks.
  • Faculty dashboard showing who is ready vs who needs intervention before class.
  • Discussion threads tied to specific video timestamps for asynchronous Q&A.
