Learning Record Store (LRS)

Also known as: LRS, xAPI LRS

A Learning Record Store (LRS) is the backend data store defined by the xAPI specification — it receives, stores, and serves activity statements generated by learning tools, simulations, and mobile apps.

An LRS is to xAPI what a gradebook is to SCORM — the persistent store where all learning statements land. Unlike a gradebook (which is course-centric), an LRS is learner-centric and holds statements from any source: LMS courses, coding environments, cyber labs, conference attendance, on-the-job observations. A university can query its LRS to build analytics across every touchpoint in a learner's journey — well beyond what the LMS alone can see.
