LMS migrations are high-stakes: a failed migration disrupts active cohorts, loses grade history, or corrupts content. The safest approach is a phased migration — new courses launch on the new LMS while legacy courses run out on the old one, with a hard cutover only after the last active cohort graduates.
What migrates cleanly vs what needs rebuilding
- Migrates cleanly — SCORM packages, video files, PDF/slide attachments, CSV user rosters, quiz questions (if exported as QTI or Aiken format).
- Needs rebuilding — Moodle plugin-specific activities (H5P, custom question types), Blackboard mashups, Canvas LTI tool configurations — these are platform-specific and have no portable equivalent.
- Requires decision — historical grades, completion records, discussion posts. Worth preserving as read-only archive; not worth rebuilding as active content.
