Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)

Also known as: LTI, LTI 1.3, LTI Advantage

LTI is an IMS Global specification that lets external tools (homework systems, lab platforms, video proctoring, plagiarism checkers) embed into an LMS with single sign-on, gradebook write-back, and roster sharing.

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is the standard maintained by 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) for embedding third-party tools inside an LMS. The current version is LTI 1.3 / LTI Advantage, which uses OAuth 2.0 + OpenID Connect and adds three services on top of basic launch:

  • Names & Role Provisioning Service — share roster + roles with the tool.
  • Assignment & Grade Services — tool writes scores back to the LMS gradebook.
  • Deep Linking — instructor picks a specific resource inside the tool when embedding.

LTI is the reason a faculty member can drop a homework assignment from Pearson MyLab, a coding lab from CodeRunner, or a proctored exam from Proctorio into a Moodle / Canvas / DeepTech course in two clicks.
