Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)

Also known as: ABC India, Academic Bank of Credits

The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is India's UGC-mandated digital repository where learners accumulate course credits from multiple institutions and programmes, supporting the NEP 2020 flexibility goals of multiple entry/exit and credit transfer.

India's Academic Bank of Credits — launched in 2021 under NEP 2020 — works like a financial bank for academic credits. Learners deposit credits earned at any UGC/AICTE-recognised institution into their ABC account (mapped to their Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker). When they switch institutions or re-enter after a break, they can redeem accumulated credits toward their new programme.

LMS requirements for ABC compliance

  • Each course carries a credit value and NCrF level tag.
  • On completion, the LMS generates a credit certificate in ABC-accepted format.
  • Credits are pushed via the DigiLocker issuer API or ABC portal CSV upload.
  • Learner transcripts reflect accumulated credits across all sources.
