Outcome-Based Education (OBE)

Also known as: OBE, competency-based education, outcome-based learning

Outcome-based education (OBE) is a curriculum design philosophy in which all teaching, learning, and assessment decisions are derived from clearly defined, measurable outcomes that learners are expected to demonstrate by the end of a course or programme.

Outcome-Based Education mandates that every course outcome (CO) contributes to one or more programme outcomes (PO), and that assessments directly measure attainment of those outcomes rather than just content coverage. AICTE's model curriculum, NBA accreditation, and UGC's undergraduate curriculum all require OBE frameworks.

OBE in an LMS

  • Each quiz, assignment, and project maps to one or more COs.
  • CO attainment is computed from direct assessment marks and indirect survey scores.
  • PO attainment rolls up from CO attainment per course.
  • Attainment reports export in NBA / NAAC formats for accreditation submissions.
